Way back in August 2010 when I was interning at BBH, I was given a brief to create wireframe and ‘look and feel’ mock-ups of the agency’s new worldwide site. I was given basic instructions that a carousel design would be used, and was given the freedom to create something representative as a starting point for debate and brainstorming.

9 months later, in May 2011 the new site was launched, housing BBH work from around the globe. The carousel design stayed, as did a few of the small details I had put into those early diagrams – which I am very proud of.

The new site is much more fitting of BBH as a forward-thinking ad agency in the digital age; is intuitive and graphically excellent.

2. Champion of the Playground for Fruit Shoot, found here http://fruitshoot.com.

Following on from the success of their ‘Skillicious’ campaign in 2009, BBH were back working with Fruit Shoot. While 2009/10 was all about “What is your skill?”, the theme for 2010/11 was going to be “What is your skill level?”.

I was again involved at the very early stages of the design process, predominantly in looking at the potential concepts and technological possibilities of what ended up as the ‘Skills Kit’ in the finished campaign.

A very sweet campaign, which I think works well within the Fruit Shoot brand.

Congrats to everyone involved, especially Simon and Manu who I know must have worked themselves into the ground for this project.

e-creative 2010/11

Following the recent exhibition of my work at New Designers 2010, I was selected by AKDK to feature in the e-creative directory.

Now in its second year, the directory is “an annual guide of the best emerging creatives”, for which I was shortlisted within the Product category.

The directory was launched in digital form during the London Design Festival, as a flip-out USB card, and is distributed free to industry.

The judges of e-creative 2010/11 included Kate Stunners (Executive Creative Director of Saatchi & Saatchi), William Knight (Deputy Director of London Design Festival) and Woody K.T. Yao (Associate Director at Zaha Hadid Architects), amongst others.

Catch 22?

So obviously I’ve been indulging in quite a bit of train travel recently, on my way to and from BBH.

One of the small pleasures of travelling in this way is having ‘dead time’, when you can forget about any stresses of the day, and simply relax. I like to use this time to listen to music, and catch up on the latest news by reading the many free newspapers on offer.

This has now become routine – Metro in the morning and Evening Standard on the way home.

BUT… when you’re running (literally) a bit late for the train, you sometimes don’t have the time to pick one up. You hope and pray that there’ll be a ruffled, old one lying on that last spare seat in the carriage – just for you. When there isn’t, I feel a certain sense of annoyance.

Now this is all very dull, but it raised an interesting question for me:

When I’m finished reading my newspaper, is it now more socially acceptable (and friendly) to leave it behind, rather than throw it in the bin?

To look at it in a fairly Dickensian manner, should I:

• Dispose of an item that has used valuable resources to produce, and I have spent only 30 mins looking at – in a bin that I’m not even sure gets fully recycled?

- OR -

• Allow a fellow traveller to expand their knowledge, discover new things, and alleviate some boredom?

I was always taught that if you use items such as this, it’s your responsibility to dispose of it; but now I am starting to feel a little uncomfortable when I take the newspaper with me when departing.

It’s interesting how human behaviour – specifically laziness – has bought about this new situation.

The question I pose is: TO DISPOSE or TO DISPERSE?

Following the manic preparation period of last Monday-Wednesday, it was nice to be able to finally relax and enjoy 4 days of duty on Ravensbourne’s stand at New Designers in London.

Thanks to everyone who came along to see the show, where I exhibited my major project in collaboration with Joy of Sound.

I was really proud of how we pulled together to make the show a reality, and also that our work was very different to the majority of other Universities/Colleges. Our course has never been focused too much on the shiny model that comes at the end of the project – but more on the process that we go through as designers.

It may sound strange to say, but I don’t think that this has been ingrained in us by Ravensbourne – but is more a mark of the great bunch of guys on our course, who I will miss being around on a daily basis.

It is the number 1 exhibition of new design talent in the UK and I, along with my fellow coursemates and other design graduates from around the country, will be exhibiting over 4 days at the Business Design Centre in Islington.

BAAAAAAA !!!

I have just started work on a 3-month placement at Bartle Bogle Hegarty (BBH) in London.

At first this seemed like a bit of an unconventional fit for me, having just graduated from a Product Design degree. But now I am really getting into the swing of it and the omens look good, and it seems as though I should be able to have a pretty good input and amazing experience here.

So… my Major Project finished yesterday with the final presentations.

The picture above is my exhibition space – the fruits of a year’s labour (and enjoyment).

I am certainly proud of the results that I produced, and hope now that my hard work will be rewarded in a few weeks time when I found out my degree result.

Everyone did a fantastic job and it’s been great to work alongside such a great bunch of people over the past 3 years. Many good times were had – with hopefully many more in the future as well!

I will be working with 2 very friendly and worthwhile charities, called MERU and Joy of Sound. They have identified a project involving music and disabled users, which is incredibibly complex and interesting, and will be a massive challenge for me.

2 projects are finished tomorrow - both AUDI and RSA competitions, and I will post up some images soon.

Dissertation will also be finished by Friday. It has been pretty amazing and really interesting to do, but I think I will be glad to get it off of my back. It has shown me that I CAN write 7000 words (and more), which I didn’t really think that I could at the beginning. If you define a stimulating and interesting topic for yourself though, then it’s actually quite easy.
